Inside Emergency Ambulance Communications

Our mission is to prevent and relieve sickness and injury, and to act to enhance the health and well being of people anywhere in New Zealand.

In order to provide the very best service we can, our Emergency Medical Dispatchers work on a four by four shift roster. This means that you work two twelve hour day shifts, then two twelve hour night shifts, followed by four days off.

The emergency medical calls we receive deal with a variety of issues ranging from birth through to death. Your ability to remain calm and focussed while dealing professionally with a highly emotional call is paramount. Additionally, as you may be speaking with people throughout New Zealand, having a good idea of the countries geography would be ideal.

Our people are unique. They have a wide range of experience across a variety of disciplines. The ability to find your way around a keyboard in order to accurately and quickly enter essential information with the ability to manage and control the call are important. However, it’s the right attitude that is the most important attribute to have for success in this role.

It is important that you are confident, can remain calm under stressful circumstances, and have the ability to remove yourself from the emotion of the call. If you have any doubts in your ability to be able to do this, then this role may not be for you.

If you enjoy shift work - on a twelve hour shift - on a four by four roster, not forgetting the four days off, and believe you are the type of person who can take often distressing and highly emotional calls, while remaining calm and focussed, we would definitely like to hear from you.
