Staff Testimonials

Mandy Welch"I joined St John Ambulance Communications because I liked the hours of shift work, the money was just enough to support my family, to be able to get medical knowledge, and of course. I needed to do something meaningful with my life. I am grateful to work with a bunch of amazingly humble people. I have learnt a lot medically and the geographic knowledge I have received. Most importantly I enjoy being able to calm someone down on the phone who is screaming at me with out me having to scream back at them. To deliver a baby over the phone now how many people can do that?. To be able to encourage some to continue CPR till the ambulance crew get there, and to tell a family that they are needed at an emergency. Yeah you could say my job is meaningful."

Ptrece Gosney-Payne"I love working for St John Ambulance Communications – in fact I have a passion for what I do. Everyday I get to make a difference in someone’s life whether they realize it at the time or not. For the duration of a call you have a very real connection with a person you will never meet, and at times you are the only connection for this person to provide help, reassurance and comfort often in times of tragedy. This is what drives my passion for being here"

Nicky Green"I helped save a persons life today….. or I calmed a hysterical mother down who’s baby was fitting .... There are not many jobs where you can walk away at the end of a shift and say that. I started with St John Communications Centre in March 1999 and it is these very reasons I have enjoyed working with St John for so long. What a thrill and honour it is to be able to help someone in such desperate need of assistance and to have such a positive , happy out come at the end is just an amazing feeling. Each day I come to work I have no idea what lays ahead and it is the unknown that makes this career choice for me so rewarding. I could never imagine myself working anywhere else.

However not every call turns out the way you would like it but the great supportive on going training you receive helps you to deal with these calls. Being able to calm a hysterical person down enough to pass instructions to them so they can help the patient until the ambulance arrives certainly leaves you feeling privileged that this caller was willing to listen and trust you. Also there are times where the outcome is not ideal and you are put under a great deal of stress but the support you get from your colleagues and management is fantastic."

"It’s more than just a job to me. You get a feeling of self worth when you realize that you have helped someone through something traumatic and heart wrenching, but also in the good instances like when you help deliver a baby. It has made me realize that there is more to life than materialistic things and it has made me value the people around me. You end up being a voice of comfort and support and to know that in some way I have made a difference in someone’s life, you can have no greater feeling."
